Wakatu Quay brings new life to the Kaikōura waterfront, creating a destination for locals and visitors to gather, connect and enjoy one of New Zealand's most spectacular coastal settings.

Sitting right on the water's edge, the building enjoys uninterrupted views across the bay to Kaikōura township and the Southern Alps beyond. It's a remarkable location, but one that comes with its own challenges. The building needed to withstand the harsh marine environment, perform reliably in exposed coastal conditions, and respect Kaikōura's renowned dark skies.

eCubed provided the building services engineering design, helping deliver practical solutions that support the building's operation while remaining sympathetic to its setting.

Particular attention was given to durability and lighting. Services were designed to stand up to the demanding coastal environment, while the lighting strategy carefully manages light spill to protect the night sky and maintain the character of the waterfront.

The result is a flexible and resilient building that enhances the waterfront experience and provides a welcoming space for the community for years to come.
